1928 STAR $ 10 Federal Reserve # 4 Cleveland ERROR # 588

There is no other note from this series on the market in this grade, higher or lower!!

The first thing about the note is that it is a STAR note! The STAR signifies a “replacement note”.

When The Bureau of Engraving and Printing or BEP prints a sheet of notes and they are damaged in any way, the notes must be destroyed. By law, they need to print notes bearing the damaged serial numbers. When they print the new notes, they must bear a STAR after the serial number. This designates the note as a “replacement note”. The STAR Notes are far more valuable than a regular printed note.

The second thing is that when they when the note was printed the serial number wheel was not set and the numbers are not printed straight. The “D” and the “0” are slightly higher than the rest of the serial numbers.

This note is from the early “Numbered” series. The number “4” on the note signifies the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland. The serial number starts with the letter “D”, which also signifies the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank. The numbered series was later changed going forward to the lettered series starting with the 1928 A printing.

It has a very low serial number of only 6 digits. Serial # D 00130588*. You don’t see the 6 digit variations come on the market very often on this note. Only 3 of these notes came up for auction this year and they were the 6 digit variation.

THE NOTES ALSO HAVE THE REDEEMABLE IN GOLD STATEMENT ON THE UPPER LEFT SIDE OF THE NOTES:

The upper left of the note states:

“REDEEMABLE IN GOLD ON DEMAND AT THE US TREASURY OR IN GOLD OR LAWFUL MONEY AT ANY FEDERAL RESERVE BANK”. So, at the time you could cash the note in each note for $ 10 in gold. Just imagine what that would be worth today if you received $ 10 in gold piece back then.

The color just pops off the note. The margins are centered very well, and the ink just pops off the note.  The colors are bright and bold.
