Product Description

The Rocky Talkie is a license-free FRS radio designed and tested in the Colorado Rockies. Created with climbers, skiers, and hikers in mind, this system is perfect for any rugged activity where close team communication is critical. The specialized lithium-ion battery provides over 3 days of battery life, even through frigid weather conditions, so you can rest assured it will last through any adventure.

For enhanced durability, the radio uses a shatterproof LED screen and a thermoplastic covering to protect the electronics. Unlike the fragile plastic belt clips of other radios, Rocky Talkie easily secures to backpacks and harnesses using an ultra-light Mammut carabiner. For extreme terrain or active use, a back-up leash is included to prevent drops.

Rocky Talkie is ready to use out of the box and requires zero configuration. The electronics are simple and reliable, without any of the superfluous radio features that kill battery life. The radio transmits the maximum power legally allowed for use without a license to offer a max range of 25 miles, however 1 to 5 miles is more typical in backcountry terrain. The radio has 5 buttons that are easy to understand and still support the critical advanced features (such as privacy codes to prevent outside interference).

FAQ
Does this radio come with an auto channel search?

Yes, that is a feature we just added to this latest model. We call it SCAN mode and it cycles through all frequencies until an active transmission is found.

Is this an open net frequency or can the radios be configured to only talk to specific other rocky talkies?

The Rocky Talkie uses the 22 FRS frequencies that are common with many other radios; however, the radio does have 121 configurable privacy codes that filter out any transmissions that don't use that same privacy code. This is not true encryption but it does do a great job at making it so you can only hear your partner.

Are they capable to support an ear piece or throat mic? Also VOX (open mic) for multiple radios?

Those are not features we prioritized in this design. Our focus was on a solid unit that can be trusted in the backcountry.

Will this work with other brands of walkies? Or is it necessary to buy two?

Yes, the Rocky Talkie can communicate with other brands of FRS radios. All you have to do is match the channel (frequency) and privacy code, then you will be able to communicate with the other radio.

Can it be hands free to talk, or push to talk?

Rocky Talkies do not have a hands free mode. The radio is compatible with headset devices that have PTT buttons, however, this is only accessible when the outer case is removed. We envisioned the radio being used either with the case on to utilize the attachment points on a backpack/harness or with the case removed and the radio stowed in a pocket while using a headset.

Is this the first generation or second generation model?

This is the newest generation, with USB-C charging and other upgrades. You can see the full list of enhancements here: https://rockytalkie.com/blogs/rocky-talkie-blog/rocky-talkie-new-enhancements

Does it have an IPX rating?

Yes, our radio has passed IP56 testing. It is splashproof/snowproof, but not fully submersible.

Is this a capability for private communication or eavesdropping without someone who are trying to listen to conversations? Is there a blocking specific to someone who is trying to engage with communication request from you?

The radio has a total of 121 CTCSS and DCS privacy codes that you can set to avoid outside interference on your channel. You will only hear an outside transmission if another radio is on the same channel and privacy code that you are on. Please note this is not true encryption.
